How to Reduce Anxiety
If left uncontained, the stresses of modern life can often mount up and lead to a feeling of constant anxiety. Once this pattern takes hold of your life, it can be quite a challenge to figure out firstly how to reduce anxiety, and to get a handle on the stresses in your everyday life.
There are both direct and indirect methods which you should apply to your life if you want to reduce anxiety. Indirect methods involve making positive changes to your lifestyle which after a short time will begin to have positive effects on your mood and mindset, and in the medium term will begin to erase anxiety from your life.

How to Reduce Anxiety through Indirect Methods
You can start by changing your diet. Processed, fatty or excessively sugary foods simply aren’t what your body needs or wants to survive. If your diet is heavy in these types of foods, you need to make changes. Start eating more fruit and vegetables, and make your meals smaller and more frequent in nature. There are so many fad diets out there, but one of the best general rules to live by is: Eat food which your grandmother would recognize as food. If you stick to this mantra, you’ll be omitting ready meals and heavily processed stuff and be on your way to a better lifestyle.
The second important step is to cut down on the stimulants. Modern coffee houses tend to serve extremely rich and strong coffee which has a dramatic effect on the nervous system. This type of coffee should really only be had as a treat. If you’re a coffee drinker, stick to weaker ‘diner-style’ coffee for the most part, and keep it to daytime hours. Your body wants to relax in the evening, not be drugged up with caffeine. If you want a hot drink in the evening, try a caffeine free tea. There are so many flavours on the market now that you are bound to find one to your tastes.
You need to get some exercise, and it needs to get your heart working. That means going for a run, or a cycle or jumping on the cross-trainer or the rowing machine. Physically tiring yourself out is one of the best ways to reduce anxiety. You simply don’t have the energy to be anxious!
How to Reduce Anxiety through Direct Methods
As well as these great lifestyle changes, you need to do some ‘soul searching’ to figure out the root of your anxiety and to try and reverse the pattern of anxiety and negative thought. Stress is a natural part of everyday life and it helps us to perform to our fullest potential. The ‘butterflies’ you feel before a job interview are a necessary part of your body preparing for action and happens to everyone. Feeling these butterflies intensely when simply driving your car however is not healthy and you need to address how you ended up in this mindset and invoke methods based on cognitive behavioral therapy to reverse these patterns. It is quite difficult to do this alone and without guidance.
The best way to approach it is through guided self help and by relying on support groups. Several ex- panic and anxiety sufferers have designed programs to help you through your anxiety. You can read a comparison of them on our best anxiety treatments page. I found the best one to be Panic Away. You can read my Panic Away review to find out what I found it so good.
