Breathe

Most of us don’t breathe as effectively as we should be. Stress causes our breathing to become shallow because our chests tighten up. This results in less oxygen being delivered to the brain and stops us from operating to our capacity. This leads to further mental and physical degradation. Instead of letting the stress take over, try this breathing exercise at regular intervals through the day: Breath in deeply, ensuring that your stomach expands. Hold this breath for 5 seconds and then exhale very slowly. Wait a few seconds before breathing in again. Do this 10 times and you’ll be feeling more relaxed and energized straight away.

Stop!

When your daily chores are getting on top of you, don’t just tackle them head on. Fighting through the day in this manner will make you more stressed and less effective. What you need to do is interrupt the stress cycle. If the boss comes in and dumps a load of extra work on your desk, don’t just rush through what you were doing in a tizzy so you can start on it. Stop, take a walk around the office, take a glass of water and let your subconscious digest the situation before getting back into your new workload. Take a few of these mini-vacations for the mind every day. If a basketball team scores 10 straight baskets, the opposing coach doesn’t let his players continue to get hammered, he calls a time-out. You should do the same.

Write

Not everyone is a great writer, but you don’t have to be. It can be a great release to write down everything you’re worried about. Use a special notepad which you only use to log your stresses and anxieties. Often times, things look much less threatening when they’re on a page in front of you. Doing this at the start of the day can help people work much more effectively and approach the day pro-actively, where doing it at night can help people who have difficulty sleeping to erase their minds of their worries and get a restful night’s sleep.

Visualize

When life is getting on top of you and you’re having trouble coping, stop and think of how you would like things to go. When things are going badly, we usually visualize the worst case scenario. This is the way we are hard wired as humans.  Try and change your outlook to a more positive one. In a way, your subconscious is kind of gullible. It can’t really see the outside world, so it’s relying on you for its information. Why not tell it that everything’s going great and that your boss will be very pleased if you get this work done on time rather than telling it that you’re miserable because you have to stay late at work. It’ll reward you with a much better outlook and very quickly you’ll find yourself working more effectively and efficiently, and you mightn’t even have to stay late you’ll be working so hard.

These tips are things you should implement every day, regardless of your current anxiety and stress levels. Keeping a healthy and happy mind is an on-going job. If you’re suffering from severe anxiety, you may need a more intensive self help guide to help get your general anxiety levels down.
